Welcome back to our Winter War podcast series. In this episode, we dive into the first week of January 1940, a pivotal moment in the Soviet-Finnish conflict. Here, we witness the profound struggles of the Red Army against the tenacious Finnish defenders, highlighting the use of innovative tactics like the Motti attack system and the famous Molotov cocktail.
The Stalled Russian Invasion
Contrary to expectations, the Soviet invasion of Finland encountered formidable resistance. The Finnish forces, highly motivated and tactically innovative, managed to halt the advance of the mighty Red Army. Key battlefronts, including the Karelian Isthmus and areas north of Lake Ladoga, became graveyards for Soviet ambitions as they faced the wrath of the sub-zero temperatures and Finnish resilience.
Doom of the Soviet 44th Division
The focus of our episode is the fate of the Soviet 44th Division, led by Alexei Ivanovich Vinogradov, which faced imminent destruction at the hands of Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo’s Finnish 9th Division Regiment. Siilasvuo, a World War I veteran and master tactician, executed a brilliant ambush strategy against the advancing 44th along the Raate road, aiming to isolate and annihilate it piece by piece.
The Motti Tactic in Action
The Finnish strategy, known as the Motti system, akin to chopping bundles of firewood, was effectively used against the 44th Division. Major Kari and Colonel Fagernas led task forces that positioned themselves along the ice roads, ready to strike. The Finns’ previous success against the Russian 163rd Division served as a grim precursor to the fate awaiting the 44th.
Night of the First January: The Assault Begins
The Finns’ meticulous planning and execution became evident on the night of January 1st. The Finnish forces, under the command of Captain Lassila, launched a surprise attack on the Russian artillery unit, taking advantage of their westward orientation. This assault marked the beginning of the end for the 44th Division.
Russian Counterattacks and Finnish Resilience
Despite several Russian counterattacks, including a tank assault, the Finns, equipped with anti-aircraft Bofors reconfigured for anti-tank use, repelled these efforts with devastating effectiveness. The Finns’ ability to sustain morale through better logistics and tactics starkly contrasted with the Russians’ dire situation.
The Sniper Threat: The Cuckoos
Finnish snipers, referred to as ‘Cuckoos’ by the Russians, played a crucial role in the conflict. Their precision and stealth further demoralized the already beleaguered Red Army troops.
The Legendary Simo Häyhä
In our next episode, we’ll delve into the story of the legendary Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä, known as the “White Death,” who had a significant impact on the Karelian Isthmus battlefront with over 500 confirmed kills.
The Collapse of the 44th Division
By early January, the 44th Division’s situation became untenable. Starving, frostbitten, and low on ammunition, the division’s morale and structure crumbled. The Finnish victory was stark, witnessing over 27,500 Soviet casualties, a testament to the effectiveness of their tactics and the harshness of the winter.

Reflections on Soviet Tactics and Leadership
The episode reflects on the Soviet style of warfare and the political motivations behind their military strategies. The leadership failures of the 44th Division’s commanders, particularly Vinogradov’s fate, underscore the harsh realities of Soviet military command.
Developments in Northern Fronts
While the Finnish forces celebrated their victory in the south, the situation in the north of Finland was equally challenging for the Soviets. Harsh Arctic conditions immobilized thousands of Soviet troops, highlighting the extreme challenges of winter warfare.
Looking Ahead: The 54th Division’s Progress
As the episode concludes, we turn our attention to the Soviet 54th Division under General Gusevski, who displayed more competence than his counterparts. His advances towards Kuhmo and the introduction of a specialized Siberian Ski Brigade promise a significant escalation in the conflict.
