As promised, some images from a trip to Ohio I undertook in May and June courtesy of the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) of South Africa funded by the American State Department.

Ohio is full of old log cabins, this a representation of the inside of Fort Marietta on the Ohio River.

The idea was to network small publishers in South Africa with small publishers in the United States, and this was a remarkable idea which I believe had a positive effect on both the South Africans and the Americans.

But this update is really to focus on the story about Ohio University and how it is linked to South Africa.

Ohio University entrance in Athens.

The first professor, and the man who started this university was Jacob Lindley, whose son Daniel was ordained as a minister and then sent to South Africa to join Mzilikazi Khumalo. He arrived at Mosega, Mzilikazi’s homestead in 1835, but less than two years later was forced to flee when the Boers raided.

After this he had a choice. Stay behind and possibly be killed by Mzilikazi in revenge for the attack, or leave his mission.

He decided to leave the mission. After this time, he ended up in Port Natal.

It’s his formative years in Athens, Ohio, that made a deep impression on the boy from the backwoods of America and who took these lessons to South Africa.

I mention Templeton who is the third African American graduate from an American University – the first from Ohio University. It is interesting for its ties to South Africa with Daniel Lindley the American Missionary who grew up here under the tutelage of his father, Professor Jacob Lindley.

The Bell tower.

A selection of the thousands of books and manuscripts from Ohio University — the African connection is obvious.

  1. I stumbled on your History of South Africa podcast a few weeks ago and I am blown away. A contrarian, I have never accepted the conventional version of history as told by politicians and their ilk. My reservations started with how the ANC was formed and what it stood and still stands for. This led me on a journey to find out the truth. Your podcast came as a bright guiding light in the darkness.

Now me and my son can’t get enough of it. Every morning at 5 am as I drive him to school and later in the afternoon, we can’t listen to anything else.

Thank you for dismantling the history propaganda sold by self serving politicians on both sides of the aisle.

    Thank you thank you.
